Is the idea a priori or a posteriori if a posteriori, is it derived from sense directly, or by a slow process of combination and association if directly from sense, is it from sight or touch, or both are samples of one class of these problems. Are our spacial judgments necessary or contingent ? ?. are they synthetical or analytical and if necessary, is this necessity original or derived are samples of another. Is the Associationist asked to produce an extreme instance of the potency of his favourite principle ? He appeals, without hesitation, to the space-perceptions of sight. Is the Intellectualist asked to produce an extreme case of an original and irreversible necessity of thought? He is almost certain to appeal to the truths of Geometry. The battle-ground on which the two great psychological schools must meet and contend is thus clearly marked out; it becomes manifest that a careful investigation of the phenomena of space and vision must throw a flood of light over the whole range of the mental sciences; and he who directs the attention of earnest metaphysical inquirers to this central question may have cause to congratulate himself on having done so, though every portion of his own building should ultimately be uprooted. I shall for the present set aside the consideration of the a priori origin of the idea of space.
