He is associated with the Bengali magazine Desh. His first novel Ghunpoka was published in the annual Puja edition of Desh. Mad & Madder: Tall Tales of a Fantastic Family is a translation of his first children's novel, Manojder Adbhut Baari. Shirshendu has received the Vidyasagar Award in 1985 for his contribution to children's literature. He has also received the Ananda Purashkar twice and the Sahitya Akademi award for one of his novels. Abhijit Gupta teaches English at Jadavpur University.
