Description:Volume-I (1948-1960) and Volume-II (1961-77) of the History of the State Bank of Pakistan were published in 1992 and 1994, respectively. This Volume was supposed to cover the period 1977-1988. However, after reflecting on various aspects of writing the history of the Bank, the author decided that in the interest of continuity of important policy developments and to address certain gaps in the earlier volumes, period before 1977 needed to be covered. It covers how the State Bank of Pakistan has discharged its responsibilities during 1972-1988 in the context of reoriented institutional set up and changing political and economic milieu. Also, history of the core functions, namely Monetary Policy and Credit Management, Exchange Rate Policy and Developments in the Regulatory Framework is covered from 1948. Main Elements of Prudential Regulations (1972-88) and some parts of chapter on ‘Developmental Role of the State Bank’ also cover parts of the period before 1972.History of the State Bank, the Central Bank of the country, and history of economic and financial developments in the country cannot be separated. The book should, therefore, be of interest to bankers, historians, students of economics and economic history, government officials, journalists and general readers. Hopefully, the readers will learn not only about macroeconomic developments and macroeconomic imbalances in the economy during this period but will also get familiar with the operation and history of developments in the three principal policy instruments, namely, monetary, fiscal and exchange policies.In writing the book, the author, instead of recording year to year developments, had chosen to cover the entire period in terms of policy developments to ensure coherent presentation of policies and widen the scope of analysis.
