Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Design, Adoption and Implementation Issues in RFID Applications" Submitted by Zeng, Yuyu for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in Aug 2006 By identifying items in a timely and automated manner, Automatic Identification (Auto- ID) technology can help to streamline and improve operations in various industries. In the past two decades, barcodes have been widely adopted and have changed the way in which operations are carried out in a range of applications from supply chain management to healthcare settings. Recently the pressure from business has prompted research into the possibility of replacing barcodes with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technology. RFID can provide more up-to-date and detailed information than barcodes, but it also has technical limitations and other drawbacks. It therefore seems likely that RFID and barcode technology will coexist for some time, and at present, there are some circumstances in which RFID cannot provide a satisfactory substitute for barcodes. The objectives of this thesis are to discuss the advantages and limitations of RFID technology, to explore potential RFID applications in different sectors, to understand factors affecting successful RFID system adoption, and to identify critical issues in the system implementation process. The benefits and limitations of using RFID technology in various settings from supply chain management to health care operations are discussed, based on literature surveys and technological studies. Several case studies were carried out to explore potential applications of RFID and barcodes in industries. As far as supply chain management was concerned, cases of a supermarket distribution centre, a postal express centre, a marine container terminal and an air cargo terminal were studied, and their operational procedures were analyzed. Suggestions for the use of RFID and barcodes either alone or in combination were proposed. In the health care category, a nursing home was studied and potential application opportunities of RFID were investigated. A theoretical analysis and a technical study were conducted to identify factors in the innovation adoption process. The result of these studies indicate that both organizational and technical factors influence this process, and that factors such as physical characteristics as well as system design play important roles in RFID system performance, thereby affecting the technology adoption process. The thesis concludes that, RFID technology has considerable potential for streamlining various operations, but also has several limitations. Technical design issues and factors affecting technology acceptance and system implementation process should be carefully considered before RFID solutions are adopted. Finally, possible directions for further study are suggested.
