Abstract: MARICULTURE PRACTICES IN RELATION TO WATER QUALITY AND THE NEARSHORE MARINE ENVIRONMENT IN HONG KONG WONG, Yuen-yee Queenie Master of Science in Environmental Management (Supervisor: Dr. Yvonne Sadovy, Department of Ecology and Biodiversity, The University of Hong Kong) 2000 Abstract Fish culture in Hong Kong is based on open system cage culture in sheltered coastal waters, which involves the intensive rearing of juvenile fish to marketable size in net cages with trash fish the typical feed. Traditional mariculture practices produce high organic loads to the vicinity of Fish Culture Zones, polluting the sediment, deteriorating both local water quality and culture conditions. In this study, the relationships between mariculture practices, water quality and the coastal environment were identified. Mariculture practices, attitudes of fish farmers, government policies and attitudes of Green Groups were investigated by means of surveys, site visits to fish farms, interviews with fish farmers and a Legislative Council member, and by requesting information from the government. The current mariculture practices are unsustainable, with wild-caught fish fry and trash fish as feed imposing pressure on fisheries resources in the wild. Changes in practices are needed with appropriate education to fish farmers and their co-operation. The viability of the industry is discussed and alternatives and developments are proposed to sustain the mariculture industry in the future.
