Cutting the shell of the older scales is a slow and laborious process. The parasites effect a small hole through the shell by biting out tiny pieces with their sharp-pointed mandibles. After a hole is cut, it is slowly enlarged by cutting around the edges. When the exits are large enough to permit escape the parasites force themselves out of the old shells.
