4.9/5 (31747 ratings)
Description:Excerpt from Winslow Homer, 1836-1910, And, Eastman Johnson, 1824-1906 France, 1867, and, to the best of available information, never publicly exhibited and therefore little known) dovetails logically with the other three Homers in the exhibition. The point is occasionally made that Homer, a complete individualist, was totally unaffected by his sojourn in France. A comparison of Croquet and the Morning Bell (one painted before his trip, the other possibly so) with Weaning the Calf, which was painted afterward, certainly leads one to agree with this conclusion. However, when the kinship of the Return of the Gleaner to the Barbizon school is considered, one feels that Homer is nevertheless a painter who is aware of the style and feel ings of others about him.
