Description:Excerpt from Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Montana: December 1st, 1902 When the Montana Volunteers were mustered into the United States service in Alay, 1898, the whole National Guard of Montana with the exception of Battery "A" Light Artillery, stationed at Helena, practically went out of existance, and owing to the lack of appropriation for military purposes, nothing could be done toward obtaining equipments and supplies from the United States War Department; effecting a settlement with the United States War Department for equipments and supplies previously furnished; nor of re-organization until the year 1901, when the Montana Legislature made an appropriation of the sum of $5,000 for the maintenance of the National Guard for the two years ending on November 30th, 1902. When the Volunteers were being mustered into the United States army service, they equipped themselves to such an extent as ordnance stores and quartermasters supplies were there obtainable at the Arsenal at Helena, the property thus taken being equipment and supplies sent out during several previous years, by the War Department for the use of the National Guard of Montana and for which the State of Montana was responsible to the United States Government.
