There is no central theme; each chapter features various souls from history and mythology, and in the twelfth chapter the house boat disappears, seguing into the sequel. John Kendrick Bangs (1862-1922) was an American author, editor, and satirist. Born in New York, Bangs worked as a editor for a number of major American magazines, often contributing poems and stories of his own. He began publishing novels in the 1880s, chiefly works of humor.
