Behind Enemy Lines: A Novel of the Battle of the Bulge (Still in the Woods)

Steven Blair Wheeler
4.9/5 (22761 ratings)
Description:Behind Enemy Lines is an historical novel set in the Battle of the Bulge. The surprise Nazi offensive that smashed the American units on the Belgian border engulfed two full US infantry regiments. While tens of thousands of GIs surrendered on December 19th, some American soldiers decided to try to evade the enemy and infiltrate through the lines. A courageous and resourceful American lieutenant, First Lieutenant Arthur Hill, who avoided capture meets a Belgian farm family and learns that the Germans are massing to capture the town that was the division headquarters. Hill tells the Belgians that if he can not rejoin his army, he will start his own war in the forested hills. Hill gathers other stray GIs and confirms that the chances of slipping through the enemy are nil. He offers his companions an alternative: stay in the forest and wait for the Army to push the enemy back into Germany. His companions agree. Eventually, he is joined by four dozen men whom he organizes into squads. They raid an abandoned US supply dump held by the Germans to secure food and supplies. They construct a camp and observe the enemy. Just before Christmas, they ambush a German supply convoy and secure a radio that can receive, but not transmit. Seeking medicines for his wounded, Hill contacts his Belgian friends and learns that a Nazi headquarters has taken over the nearby village. The German troops are SS. Unknown to Hill, the commander of the SS security battalion, SS Major Karl Grabner is a highly decorated veteran whose wounds from the Russian front have kept him from a front line command. Grabner realizes Germany will lose the war and his one aim is to die in combat. As Grabner learns of the convoy ambush, he decides that wiping out the Americans in the forest will either earn him a transfer to the front, or enable him to die in battle. Behind Enemy Lines is the second part of the Still in the Woods trilogy. Part one is Fight to Survive, published in March, 2014. Part three is Forest Battles, scheduled for publication in May, 2015.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
