Asenath of the Ford

Eliza Margaret J. Humphreys
4.9/5 (30812 ratings)
Description:First published in 1892; Asenath of the Ford features two family homes close to one another; their description being very close to that of Rita’s Scottish birthplace; though the properties in this story are set on the outskirts of Bideford. Asenath’s mother arrives in Bideford in the dead of night; she rushes across the ford, and leaves her illegitimate baby (Asenath) outside the home of her sister. Later, Asenath runs away to Clovelly and Lundy Island; after an altercation with her tyrannical teacher, Miss Grinstone. The altercation ensues when Asenath can contain herself no longer, and tells Miss Grinstone exactly what she thinks of her; after which things become a little violent. At Clovelly, Asenath meets Tavvy, the wise old woman; who lives in an old cottage down by the sea. Tavvy is described as “A very tiny old woman with a small withered face, brown as seaweed, and bright black eyes which glowed and twinkled when she spoke”. Asenath of the Ford contains a supernatural element, in the form of the curse of the shadow; which is explained later on in the book. The name of Asenath was discovered by Rita, quite by accident, on a Bideford tombstone. Asenath of the Ford received very good reviews, and was proclaimed a “second Lorna Doone”. It was first published in three volumes in 1892, and then in a single volume edition by the same publishers in 1895; from which this Kindle version has been made, using the very latest O.C.R. software. This Kindle book also contains a complete list of Rita's prose, from 1877 to 1936. Of the novels by Rita that I have read; this is my personal favourite.Paul Jones L.R.P.S.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
