Campaigns of 1805: Ulm, Trafalgar & Austerlitz

George Armand Furse
4.9/5 (17703 ratings)
Description:First published in 1905, this book examines three campaigns of a century earlier, two military and one naval, together they brought both welcome and un-welcome news to Napoleon ; together they had a major impact on his destiny. In 1805, England, Austria, Sweden and Russia formed the 3rd Coalition to overthrow the French Empire. When Bavaria sided with Napoleon, Mack led a 72,000-strong army to invade her. However it brought the Austrians into conflict with the French before the Russians, busy marching through Poland, could lend their assistance. Napoleon withdrew his 180,000-strong army waiting at Boulogne to invade England, and marched to meet General Mack. In the clash that followed the Austrians lost some 2,000 men and retreated to Ulm. There he was surrounded by the French and was forced to surrender 30,000 men, with another 10,000 killed or wounded, and only some 20,000 managing to escape. For his blunders Mack was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. Meanwhile Nelson was at sea and met the combined French and Spanish fleet off Cape Trafalgar and defeated them so decisively that if Napoleon had entertained plans of dealing with the Austrians and then returning to the coast to sail for England, those plans were in ruin. In early December Napoleon, with 73,000 men and 139 guns, met 60,000 Russians and 25,000 Austrians with 278 guns at Austerlitz. In the affray the Allies lost 27,000 killed, wounded, and taken prisoner and many of their cannon. The French lost about 8,000 men. Napoleon despaired of defeating the English at sea but on land he looked impregnable. It would be a further ten years before Wellington and the Allies would bring him to book at Waterloo. To appreciate the full meaning of Trafalgar, an understanding of what was happening on the battlefields of Europe is essential. This book neatly serves that purpose. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
