Description:This dissertation makes the case for creating a program that brings the concept of therapeutic writing to those who need it most---the chronically ailing poor. Writing about emotional upheaval and traumatic experiences has been shown to heal both mind and body, the therapeutic results of which have been documented in clinical research spanning two decades. Those at the low end of the socioeconomic continuum suffer from chronic ailments and physical and emotional pain at proportionally higher rates than the population as a whole and could benefit from therapeutic writing but are usually unaware of the practice and the process.;The health plight of the poor is documented by examining the root cause of chronic illness which is consistently shown to be stress in its many forms, and the effectiveness of therapeutic writing is demonstrated through understanding the interrelationship of the brain, mind, and memory, as well as through language and writing. A pilot research study was conducted to determine the effects of a therapeutic writing program on patients with chronic illness and pain in two community health clinics in New Jersey.;Participants attended 12 one-hour weekly sessions, consisting of a discussion of stress and mind-body related topics and a writing exercise. They completed the Holmes-Rahe Stress checklist; pre-and post TEA-Factor-Time-Emotion-Assessment questionnaires and a debriefing questionnaire. The patients' medical charts were reviewed pre- and post-program for changes in metabolic statistics. Participants were under moderate to high stress and susceptible to stress-related illness, and their diagnosis showed myriad chronic illness and pain. Subjective and objective data collected was analyzed and correlated individually and by group.;The participants wrote emotionally about personal topics that generally they had not disclosed to anyone before and said the program had been extremely valuable or meaningful to them, and had a positive long-lasting effect on them. Participants showed improvement in self-attitude and self-directed stress. Three months after program completion, reductions were seen in pain levels, blood pressure, and clinic visits. When individuals write about traumatic and personally upsetting events, improvements are found in both subjective and objective markers of health and well-being.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
